Before you sign anything, ask the right questions. The answers will tell you far more about a sanding robot vendor than any brochure or demo video ever can.
Many so-called turnkey systems still require operators to place each door in a fixed location using adjustment pods, jigs, or fixtures. That repeated positioning step takes up valuable production time and adds operator dependency, especially for custom shops running different door sizes and styles. Instead of simplifying sanding, it makes the automation feel more manual than truly autonomous.
The robot is the main core of the system, so you should ask for the exact brand, model, maintenance interval, and expected service life. VA uses the FANUC CRX series — an industrial-grade, IP67-rated robot arm designed for up to 8 years of maintenance-free operation. Important note: If a vendor claims long maintenance-free operation, ask for the exact robot brand and model so you can verify it.
Pressure control is critical in sanding. It directly affects finish quality, consistency, and performance across different materials. VA offers both industrial-grade integrated and external force-sensing solutions based on your requirements. If a vendor uses an industrial robot, ask whether the system includes an external industrial-grade force sensor. If they cannot clearly explain how pressure is measured and controlled, that is a red flag.
Ask what ongoing support is actually available, how quickly the vendor responds, which support channels are offered, and whether help is included or billed separately. VA provides direct support from the people who design and build the machines — not a call centre — through instant messaging, phone, on-screen help button, remote diagnostics, and in-field service. The system can also send automatic diagnostic reports, helping us spot and resolve issues faster, often before they affect production.
Any vendor confident in their product should be willing to connect you with existing users. Ask to speak with shops similar to yours in size, product mix, and production style. VA customers consistently report reduced labour costs, improved quality, and faster throughput. You can read their stories on our testimonials page, ask us for a direct reference, or visit one of our customer facilities near you for a live demo. You are also welcome to visit Vancouver to see the full product line in person.
Some systems are marketed as lean, yet still require the operator to position every door in a fixed place using pods, jigs, or fixtures. That adds time, effort, and unnecessary handling to one-piece flow. VA takes a different approach. Using AI, our system makes one-piece flow more optimal while maintaining high-quality sanding results. There is no need to position the door in a fixed place — just place it freely on the table, and the robot handles the rest.
Some vendors sell the robot and leave key elements like dust collection, programming, safety enclosures, tooling, and support to be sourced and integrated separately. VA delivers a complete turnkey solution with everything included — robot, controller, sanding tools, dust collection, safety enclosure, and operator training — in one cell that sands frames, panels, edges, and breaks corners, so you can get up and running without a third-party integrator.
Some systems tie you to proprietary consumables that are not recognised abrasive brands, which can limit finish quality and force changes to your sanding process. Ask whether the system uses high-quality branded abrasives that can be sourced from your local dealer or supplier, so the machine fits the way your shop already works. VA partners with SurfPrep, and if it is not available in your country, we will work with you on a suitable alternative.
Safety is one of the most important questions to ask, and it is also one that often causes confusion because robot safety has advanced significantly in recent years. Standard industrial robots usually rely on cages, fencing, or light curtains to reduce collision risk, while collaborative robots are built to work more safely alongside people. VA uses a collaborative robot design, which offers a more advanced safety approach because it can automatically slow down when people enter the work area instead of relying only on hard guarding and the full stops commonly associated with standard industrial robots, which are not ideal for sanding.
VA installs in around few hours, not days, including calibration, training, and production refinement. If a vendor is quoting long installation times or extra custom engineering on site, the system is not truly turnkey. Many turnkey systems still come with longer lead times and limited factory testing before shipping. VA offers one of the shortest lead times in the market, with systems factory-tested on production doors before delivery, arriving fully assembled and ready to install on your shop floor in hours.
If the answer is “weeks” or “you’ll need a programmer,” that is a red flag. Your operators are woodworkers, not software engineers. VA systems use simple touchscreen controls with recipe-based dropdowns, so most operators are running parts independently within hours, not weeks. We also provide full two-week training and make recipe changes quick and straightforward. In many other systems on the market, recipe changes are slower and more technical, which can delay production and increase operator dependency.
Before you buy, know what you need on your shop floor:
Such a compact system design, it requires no extra floor space beyond its footprint. You only need clear space at the front for loading and unloading, with air and power drops at the back.
Ideally requires 5 ft of space on both sides for part picking and placing. A pick cart is required, while finished parts can either feed into your conveyor line or be stacked on a second cart. Recommended cart size is 30" × 65" or larger.
Ensure enough infeed and outfeed clearance for parts to pass through. Power: 220V single-phase @ 25A. Air: 60 CFM at 80 PSI, 1" diameter supply line. You can also opt for electric sanders.
Power Requirements: It runs on standard single-phase wall power, unlike many systems on the market that require high-voltage, three-phase electrical service. Consult your local electrician for code compliance.
Air Requirements: The system requires 17 CFM @ 80 PSI for normal operation. Please confirm that your shop air supply can consistently meet this requirement.
